Raindrop Shawl Pattern

I started this blog for the purpose of posting patterns, so here goes with the first one. The idea of this shawl was to use every bit I could of a 100g ball of fingering weight, and then finish the edging with some fabulous Koigu. I had been looking for a raindrop pattern for some time, and was utterly unable to find one. So I made one up, and here it is for you, too.

Raindrop Shawl

Design by Renee Strouts

Size US 6 circular needles

MC: 1 skein Rio De La Plata Solid Sock (100g/437yds.)
CC: 1 skein KPPPM (50g/175yds.)

Gauge: less relevant.

For laceweight yarn, use US 4 needles.

Abbreviations

MC: Main color

CC: Contrast color

Sts: stitches

K: knit

P: purl

Yo: yarn over

K2tog: knit two stitches together

Ssk: slip two stitches separately knit-wise, insert left needle into the back of the stitches and knit them together

Center k3: slip two stitches together knit-wise, k 1, pass slipped stitches together over the k 1

Center p3: slip one purl-wise, slip two stitches separately knit-wise, transfer the two knit-wise stitches back to the left needle, purl two together through the back loops, pass slipped stitch over

Pattern

Using MC, CO 5 sts.

Row 1 (RS): K2, yo, k1, yo, k2
Row 2 (WS): K2, p3, k2

Work Chart A one time.
Work Chart B 9 times or until you become bored or happy.
Break MC, join CC.
Work Chart C one time, stopping after row 13 (do not work an even row).

Bind off loosely as follows: K2, *transfer two stitches back to the left needle, k2tog through the back loop, k1*, repeat between stars to end.

Block vigorously. Weave in ends. Wear.

How to work the charts

Begin at the bottom & work upward.

Odd chart rows: K2, work next row of chart from right to left, k1 (this is your center stitch), work same row of chart a second time from right to left, k2.

The repeat is outlined in red.

Even chart rows (EXCEPT FOR THE PINK ROW) are NOT included in the chart. Normal even rows are worked: K2, p to last 2 sts, k2

The pink row is worked: k2, work pink row of chart from left to right, p1 (this is the center stitch), work pink row again from left to right, k2

Please note! It is very easy to get into the rhythm of always purling the even rows. Please pay attention to the chart, as I myself spent far too much time cursing at and un-knitting the pink row when I forgot.

Please let me know if you find any problems with the pattern, I'll try to fix them as soon as possible. Enjoy!

I love your pattern! I was actually looking for raindrops! However, I don't seem to be able to print the graphs. They run off the edge of the page, or I can only get part of them. HELP!!!!

Hi,

I've just started doing the beautiful pattern of yours out of handspun wool for a scarf exchange item that i'm working on. I've come across a little problem, at first I thought it was something that I wasn't following properly, but i've counted and re-counted and started three times now, but on chart A from Row 9 to 11 there seems to be too many stiches (I end up with two left over) in row 11 and consequently also on row 13. Just wondering if there should be a k2tog there somewhere or what should happen? I'm only learning to knit so don't have the expertise to be able to sort out where this needs to be.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to your response.

Many thanks
Vikky

I love that shawl pattern! So elegant!

Also I love your blog title. I've been thinking up some for myself, but can't come up with anything.

Renee, thanks SO much for sharing this lovely pattern! I made one! The pattern and stitch pattern both are flawless - no mistakes! You should be selling this, not giving it away, girl! I don't know how to share my photos with you, but here's my Ravelry url: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/FairySpunFibers/raindrop-shawl

I met you in the Dallas Airport. I loved your shawl. You said you would be adding written directions to your Raindrop shawl pattern. What was the name of the yellow yarn you were using? Hope you got the job. Will be looking for the directions.

Thanks, Jean from PHX

Thank you so much for this beautiful pattern! I am going to knit it to wear as my wedding shawl, instead of using a veil.

I feel like I am the only student in class that is not following along correctly.
Here is how I see it:
CO 5 st...OK...
After we work Row 1, we have 7 st on the needles.
After we work Row 2, we have 7 st on the needles.
Then, we work the first line of Chart A, and it appears to start with 3 st. Is there something fundamental that I am missing?
Thanks for your help

Hey Michael J Keller,

Did you read through the written instruction parts? It says that you need to knit two then work the row of the chart then knit one then work the row of the chart again and then knit two.

Not sure if this makes any difference for you but I know how easy it is just to try and zoom straight ahead into the chart, I almost did that myself but then stopped and read through the instructions, I'm glad I did otherwise I would have given up.

Hope this helps,
Vikky
